Drywall Sheet Calculator

Calculate exactly how many sheets of drywall you need for any room.

Let’s be honest โ€” nobody wants to make multiple trips to the hardware store during a drywall project. One trip for sheets, another for the ones you miscounted, a third because you forgot about that closetโ€ฆ

This calculator handles the messy math so you don’t have to. Enter your room dimensions, subtract openings, pick your sheet size, and get a complete materials list in seconds.

One trip. All the materials. Zero headaches.

๐Ÿ“ Sheet Size Guide

4′ ร— 8′ (32 sq ft): Most common, easy to handle, fits through doors. Best for DIYers.

4′ ร— 10′ (40 sq ft): Good for 9-10′ ceilings. Fewer seams but heavier.

4′ ร— 12′ (48 sq ft): Fewest seams, best for pros. Requires helpers.

๐Ÿ”ง Thickness Options

  • 1/4″: Curved walls, covering old surfaces
  • 3/8″: Double-layer applications
  • 1/2″: Standard walls (most common)
  • 5/8″: Fire-rated, ceilings (reduces sag)

โฑ๏ธ Time Estimates

For a 12′ ร— 12′ room (DIY):

  • Hanging: 3-5 hours
  • Taping: 2-3 hours
  • Mudding (3 coats): 6-8 hours (over 3+ days)
  • Sanding: 2-3 hours

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many sheets of drywall I need?
Calculate total wall area (room perimeter ร— ceiling height) plus ceiling area if needed. Subtract door and window areas. Divide by your sheet size (32 sq ft for 4ร—8). Add 10-15% for waste and cuts. Our calculator does all this automatically.
How much drywall do I need for a 12ร—12 room?
For a 12ร—12 room with 8′ ceilings (walls only): Wall area = 48 ft perimeter ร— 8 ft = 384 sq ft. Minus ~42 sq ft for typical openings = ~342 sq ft. With 15% waste = ~393 sq ft รท 32 sq ft/sheet = 13-14 sheets. Add 4-5 more sheets if doing the ceiling.
Should I use 4ร—8 or 4ร—12 drywall sheets?
4ร—8 sheets are easier to handle, fit through standard doors, and work well for DIY projects. 4ร—12 sheets reduce seams and are more efficient for professional crews, but require helpers and may not fit through doorways. For ceilings 9′ or higher, longer sheets reduce joints.
How much joint compound do I need?
Plan for about 6-8 pounds per 100 sq ft of drywall (roughly 3 sheets of 4ร—8). A standard 3.5-gallon pre-mixed bucket covers approximately 400-500 sq ft with three coats. For a typical 12ร—12 room, one bucket is usually sufficient.
What’s the proper waste factor for drywall?
Use 10% for simple rectangular rooms with few openings. Use 15% for average rooms (the standard recommendation). Use 20-25% for complex layouts with many angles, soffits, archways, or numerous door/window cutouts.
How many drywall screws do I need?
Use approximately 32-40 screws per 4ร—8 sheet (about 1 screw per square foot). Screws should be 12″ apart on edges and 16″ apart in the field. For ceilings, use 12″ spacing throughout. A 1-lb box contains roughly 200 screws.
Should drywall be hung horizontally or vertically?
Horizontal (long edge parallel to floor) is standard for walls 8-9′ high. It places the long seam at a comfortable finishing height and reduces total seam length. Vertical works for 4′ wide spaces or very tall walls where sheets span floor to ceiling.
What thickness drywall should I use?
1/2″ is standard for most walls. 5/8″ is required for garage-to-house walls (fire code) and recommended for ceilings to prevent sag. 1/4″ is for curved surfaces or overlaying damaged walls. Always check local building codes for specific requirements.
Can one person hang drywall?
One person can hang 4ร—8 sheets on walls using proper techniques. For ceiling work, larger sheets, or heights above shoulder level, two people are strongly recommended. A drywall lift (~$40/day rental) makes solo ceiling work possible but still challenging.
How long does a drywall project take?
For a typical 12ร—12 room (DIY): Hanging takes 3-5 hours. Taping and first mud coat takes 2-3 hours. Two more mud coats (with drying time between) adds 4-6 hours over 2-3 days. Sanding takes 2-3 hours. Total active work: 15-20 hours spread over 4-5 days.
